Washington Sundar tests positive for Covid-19; doubtful for SA ODIs

India all-rounder Washington Sundar is unlikely to feature in the upcoming the three-match ODI series against South Africa as he has tested positive for Covid-19.

Sundat, 22, was to scheduled travel to Cape Town from Mumbai along with other members of the ODI squad for the series getting underway on January 19 however, it is still not clear whether the all-rounder has reached the Maharashtra’s capital or not.

As per reports, if Sundar doesn’t travel in the chartered flight along with the other selected players for the ODI series, he could be individually flown to South Africa by the BCCI later however, the chances of such development are very slim at the moment.

“He (Sundar) tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad,” an office-bearer confirmed to Cricbuzz on Tuesday.

The BCCI is yet to make a call on Sundar’s developement as the top board officialls are busy with the Indian Premeir League (IPL) Governing Council (GC) meeting. It is most likley that the board will give an update on Sundar bu Tuesday eveving or Wednesday, once the IPL GC gets over.

Notably, Sundar has been out of cricketing action for almost 10 months due to injuries.

Sundar, who had last played for India in March 2021, had recently recovered and was part of the Tamil Nadu squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy where the all-rounder performed fairly well and made his return to the national ODI squad.

Notably, the India ODI squad, which will be led by KL Rahul in the absence of Rohit Sharma, has two other spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal.

The first ODI of the series will be held in Paarl on January 19 while the second match will be held on January 21 at the same venue. The third and final ODI will be held at Newlands Stadium in Cape Town on January 23 while the T20I series has already been postponed for June.
