Toyota to withdraw TV commercials during Tokyo Olympics due to lack of support, says report

Toyota, the sponsor of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, will reportedly refrain from running Games-related TV commercials due to lacklustre public support for the showpiece event.

A report has also said that two-third of Japanese doub over the possibility of a safe Games during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

A report in Yomiuri newspaper also said that Chief Executive Oficer of Toyota Motor Corp, Akio Toyoda, will not attend the opening ceremony.

Toyota however, has not responded to the report.

According to a survey published by the Asahi newspaper on Sunday, two-thirds of Japanese population doubt the country can host a safe and secure Olympics amid a fresh wave of coronavirus infections.

In the poll, around 68 percent respondents expressed doubt about the ability of Olympic organisers to control infections. Meanwhile 55 percent were opposed to the holding of the showpiece event.

However, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has hoped the Japanese people will warm to the Games once it begins and as Japanese athletes begin winning medals.

The Tokyo Olympics will begin on July 23.
