Tokyo-bound grappler Sumit Malik provisionally suspended after failing dope test

In a disappointing news for India, Olympic-bound grappler Sumit Malik has been provisionally suspended after failing a dope test few days ahead of the the Tokyo Games.

Malik was tested positive positive for the banned substance during the recent Qualifiers in Bulgaria.

Malik had qualified for the Tokyo Games in the 125kg category at the Bulgaria event, which was the last chance for wrestlers to earn quotas.

As per reports, the UWW (United World Wrestling) has already informed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) on this regard.

The grappler, who is the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold-medallist, has to give his B sample on June 10.

Reports suggested that Malik, who had nursing a knee injury which he suffered during the national camp before the Olympic Qualifiers, have had taken some Ayurvedic medicine to treat his injury which might have contained some banned substances.

It all dependes now on June 10 as if his B sample also returns positive, he can be banned from the sport.

Earlier in 2016, Narsingh Pancham Yadav was handed a four-year doping suspension after failing a dope test just before the then Rio Games.
