Indian gaming companies increasingly gaining momentum in country

The Indian gaming companies are increasingly gaining momentum in the country while presenting a whole new career in Esports.

According to a recent KPMG report, India has the second-largest base of online gamers in the world after China. Gaming companies in India are investing heavily in different activities to engage with the community using various platforms to spread awareness and build engagement for mobile gaming and esports in India.

Some of the initiatives that are building engagement for the gaming community are as follows:

● Introducing new content formats

Gaming companies are exploring new forms of content to reach the audience and encourage them to take up an interest in online gaming and esports. For example, Loco, a live game streaming platform has partnered with Dice Media for India’s first esports web series “Clutch”.

The entire series focuses on a powerful squad tackling hardships to win a tough Battleground tournament. Similarly, other companies too are investing in steam-in ads, partnering with influencers to create exclusive campaigns, and exploring new-age properties with the presence of a young audience.

● Global Associations

Gaming companies have now started to partner with large-scale global events like Decathlons and Olympics which help them increase visibility among the sports and esports community in India.

These events highlight the potential of esports and skilled gaming and motivate the young gamers to follow their passion and get the right training to reach those heights of professional gaming.

● Building a gaming community

Most of the game streaming platforms have the facility of video chat and voice chat with other gamers from the community across the country which helps them communicate while they play. Gamers can leverage this facility to learn new techniques, hacks, and also discuss their gameplay.

Gaming companies also host live streams and share expert advice from their top gamers. The companies also interact with gamers across the country through interactive social media activities to bring the community closer and make them stronger.

There is a constant evolution in this industry that is opening up enough and more opportunities for the gaming ecosystem to thrive and grow.

● Launching custom made merchandise

As fans, people have always tried to show their love, appreciation, and support through branded merchandise. Many die-hard fans of Tony Stark aka Iron Man or FC Barcelona have worn their jerseys, hats, and masks with pride.

Merchandise has always allowed fans to connect with their preferred team and support their character on a deeper level. Today, as the love for esports grows multifold, the rising demand for custom-made merchandise has also increased.

It has become imperative for teams and gamers to connect with their fans and what better way to relate to them through truly customized merchandise that can represent not just their love for gaming but also their individuality.

Notably, gaming and esports is the most dynamic and fast-growing industry at a global level. India too has seen an uplift in the number of professional gamers as well in-game streaming platforms. While the gamers are always on the lookout for something more interesting, the gaming companies are thriving to provide this to its game streamers and it has become imperative for them to broaden their horizons and keep the gamers engaged in one or another way.

Fantasy gaming apps suspend services in Karnataka

Several fantasy gaming platforms like Mobile Premier League (MPL), Paytm First Games and RummyCircle have suspended their services for users in the state of Karnataka after the state legislation passed a law prohibiting money wagering and betting on Tuesday.

The law, passed as part of an amendment to the Karnataka Police Act, bans all forms of online gambling and betting platforms.

Even in apps like MPL, which have been ruled as ‘games of skill’ by several courts in India, the law passed in Karnataka prohibits money wagering and as per it, offenders will be subject to a maximum imprisonment of three years or a fine of up to Rs 1 lakh.

On Wednesday, MPL greeted its in Karnataka were greeted with the following message: “Sorry! The law in your state does not permit you to play Fantasy sports”.

Along with MPL, RummyCircle, Nazara’s HalaPlay and many other online gaming apps have updated their respective terms of service in Karnataka.

Although Dream11, one of India’s most popular gaming apps backed by Tiger Global, was still operational in Karnataka however, Paytm First Games was not.

Before Karnataka, states like Assam, Odisha, Nagaland, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana had already banned online gaming apps.

The move could be seen as a huge blow to online fantasy gaming platforms, which have spent a considerable amount of time and money in approaching several courts in India and have established the jurisprudence that their platforms relies on skill gaming rather than betting.

Moreover, the timing of the Karnataka law is unfortunate as it comes in the middle of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season, the time when such platforms registers high amount of activities and traction. Also, the IPL will soon be followed by the T20 World Cup.

As per reports, the online gaming industry is mulling to challenge the Karnataka government law, claiming that it goes against the jurisprudence established by multiple Indian courts, including the Supreme Court.

Earlier in August, the Supreme Court had upheld a verdict by the Rajasthan High Court, holding that Dream11 was a game of skill and not chance.

“Given the unique nature of fantasy sports, the FIFS [Federation of Indian Fantasy Sports] members urge the [Karnataka] government to respect and align with the judicial and constitutional protections provided to its business activities,” the industry body FIFS had said in a statement earlier.

Significantly, Dream11 is the founding member of FIFS, which also counts MPL as one of its members.

Big boost to country’s fast growing eSports movement as EPWA launches in India

In a bid to ensure the professional, legal and contractual rights of eSports players in India are safeguarded thoroughly, an ESports Players Welfare Association (EPWA) has been created which would hand a big boost to the country’s fast growing eSports movement.

Globally, ESports has an estimated audience of 474 million and is the fastest growing among all sports.

ESports will also be a medal event at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou.

As per a report, India currently has 1,50,000 players and around 60,000 teams and the number of esports players in the country is expected to grow to 1.5 million players and 250,000 teams by 2025.

eSports Players Welfare Association (EPWA) aims to be the guardian organisation when it comes to shielding the interests of eSports athletes across India. EPWA will be the first of its kind in India to offer assistance to athletes engaging in eSports. Amar Ratnam, an ex-pro gamer, has been appointed as a liaison between the players and the industry.

Commenting on the development, Ritesh Nath, the CEO & Founder of EPWA said: “The future of eSports in India is bright, especially due to the penetration of 4G and the subsequent surge in mobile gaming. Professional governance and structures are vital to the success of any sport; the absence of either in the eSports industry in India is one of the key drivers that led to the formation of eSports Players Welfare Association (EPWA). With the exponential increase in the number of eSports players (amateur and professional) and avenues for them to earn a living, EPWA will strive to ensure their rights are protected by defining industry norms, setting regulations, and assisting relevant stakeholders to form policies.”

On the other hand, Shivani Jha, EPWA Director expressed: “eSports has been in the limelight lately with attention being drawn to it thanks to its inclusion as a medal event at the upcoming Asian Games in 2022 and potentially an Olympic nod as well. As wide as the gaming industry may be, absence of any regulations or stringent rules in eSports allows for exploitation of players. The top priority at EPWA will be to address player grievances regarding their legal obligations and contracts.”

“EPWA will also work to bridge the awareness gap that exists in the country by educating the industry about the latest eSports rules and regulations from India and around the globe,” she added.
