Sulking Ganguly wanted to issue show cause notice to Kohli after his PC: Report

Following the claims made by former India skipper Virat Kohli in his pre-departure conference to South Africa in December 2021, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly reportedly wanted to issue a show cause notice to the then India Test captain before the beginning of the ongoing tour to the rainbow nation.

Notably, ahead of the Indian team’s departure to South Africa, Kohli had addressed the press-conference and had claimed that no one from the BCCI or the selection committee had asked him to reconsider his decision to give up T20I captaincy. Kohli’s claim had contradicted Ganguly, who had earlier said that he had personally requested the run-machine to not leave the leadership role in the shortest format of the game.

Meanwhile, Kohli, 33 had also claimed that he was informed by the selectors that he won’t be the ODI captain anymore just one and a half hours before the Test squad for the South Africa series was announced and there was no prior communication on the same from Indian board.

Notably, Kohli’s claim didn’t go down well with the Indian board and now, reports suggest that Ganguly had prepared a draft letter and wanted to send a show cause notice to the former captian.

However, as Ganguly discussed the matter with the board members, they didn’t find it appropriate to issue a notice to the Test captain just before the start of a Test series.

“And the board president was all for issuing a show cause notice to Kohli,” a source close to the development was quoted as saying by India Ahead News.

Recemtly after losing the South Africa series, Kohli had also decided to leave the Test captaincy.

Reacting to his decision, Ganguly lauded Kohli for taking the team to new heights in all formats of the game and termed the decision as a personal one which even the board respects.

“Under Virat’s leadership Indian cricket has made rapid strides in all formats of the game… his decision is a personal one and bcci respects it immensely… he will be an important member to take this team to newer heights in the future. A great player. well done… @BCCI @imVkohli,” Ganguly said in his tweet.

Moreover, Kohli had also reportedly turned down an offer by the BBCI to play a farewwell match after he had stunned the cricketing world by announcing his departure as the Test captain of the Indian team.

As per a report in Hindustan Times (HT), the Indian board had offered a farewell match to Kohli and asked him to lead the Indian side for one last time in his 100th Test match. However, it has been learnt that Kohli refused to accept the offer and said: “One match makes no difference. That’s not how I am”.

After Kohli’s decision, the BCCI is most likley to appoint white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma as the new Test captain however, it is yet to make an official announcement.

So far, run-machine Kohli is the most successful Test captain India has ever had. Under Kohli, India played a total of 68 Test matches and won 40, drew 11, and lost in 17 matches.

Notably, Kohli had also led the Indian side to its maiden Test series win in Australia in 2018 beside winning a Test series in Sri Lanka and West Indies.

In 2021, Kohli guided the Indian side to secure an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match Test series against England beside leading his side to the final of the World Test Championship (WTC).

Kohli reportedly turns down BCCI’s offer to play farewell Test as captain

Following his sudden decision to step down as the captain of India in Test cricket, Kohli has reportedly turned down an offer by the Board of Control for Cricket (BBCI) to play a farewwell match.

On Saturday, Kohli had stunned the cricketing world by announcing his departure as the Test captain of the Indian team.

Now as per a report in Hindustan Times (HT), the Indian board had offered a farewell match to Kohli and asked him to lead the Indian side for one last time in his 100th Test match. However, it has been learnt that Kohli refused to accept the offer and said: “One match makes no difference. That’s not how I am”.

In 2021, Kohli guided the Indian side to secure an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match Test series against England beside leading his side to the final of the World Test Championship (WTC).

Notably, Kohli had also stepped down from T20I captaincy after India’s poor show in the 2021 World Cup in the UAE and in December 2021, the BCCI had removed him from the ODI captaincy. The BCCI had named Rohit as the new white-ball skipper.

Later in an interview, BCCI chief Ganguly had claimed that he had requested Kohli not to step down from T20I captaincy however, his statement was contradicted by Kohli, who had said that he was informed about the ODI captaincy only one and a half hour before the team selection meeting.

Notably, Kohli’s revelation of the development in a press-conference before Team India’s departure for South Africa had triggered a storm in Indian cricket.

The controversy is seen as one of the main reason behind Kohli’s sudden announcement of stepping down from captaincy and many reports also suggested that all was not well between Kohli and the BCCI chief.

Kohli, 33, was first appointed as India captian at the Adelaide Test in 2014 against hosts Australia. He was appointed as the full-time captian after MS Dhoni had announced his retirement from the format ahead of the fourth Test at Sydney in January 2015.

Significantly, India won a series in every country they travelled under Kohli barring South Africa and New Zealand.

Virat Kohli steps down as India Test captain

Just a day after Team India lost the three-match Test series 1-2 to hosts South Africa, Virat Kohli on shocked the cricketing world as he announced to step down as the captain of Indian team in the longest format.

Kohli, 33, was first appointed as India captian at the Adelaide Test in 2014 against hosts Australia. He was appointed as the full-time captian after MS Dhoni had announced his retirement from the format ahead of the fourth Test at Sydney in January 2015.

Taking to his social media accounts, Kohli said: “It’s been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I’ve done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it’s now. There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief.”

“I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can’t do that, I know it’s not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team. I want to thank the BCCI for giving me the opportunity to lead my country for such a long period of time and more importantly to all the teammates who bought into the vision I had for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation. You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful,” added he.

Notably, after stepping down, Kohli is the most successful India Test skipper. Under his time as the captain, India played 68 Tests, winning 40, losing 17 and drawing 11 and with a win percentage of 58.82.

“To Ravi Bhai and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved us upwards in Test Cricket consistently, you all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life. Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a Captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian Cricket forward,” concluded Kohli.

Earlier in September 2021, Kohli had announced to leave the T20I captaincy after the Men’s T20 World Cup in the UAE. Meanwhile, Kohli had also stepped down as the captain of the Indian Premier League (IPL) side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).

In December 2021, Kohli was replaced by opener Rohit Sharma as the ODI captain by the BCCI.

Significantly, India won a series in every country they travelled under Kohli barring South Africa and New Zealand.

After this development, Rohit is now most likley to be the next Team India captain. His first assignment as the full-time Test captain would be against Sri Lanka in the end of Februray when the islanders will tour India for a two-match Test series.

The two-Test series will be followed by a three-match T20I rubber.

“Just like a cellphone in every hand is a reality today, we want a smartwatch on every wrist in wake of the new normal. People need to keep a tab on their health even while on the go and there can be no better enabler than smartwatches,” he added.

The Indian cricket skipper too echoed the sentiments about the health concerns for people.

Referring to the collaboration, he said: “Fire-Bolttas a brand personifies energy, dynamism, and vibrancy, all of which has actually been a driving force in my sporting as well as a life journey. The fact that the company is at the helm of history being scripted in the Indian wearable space makes me proud as an advocate of Vocal for Local and Atmanirbhar Bharat.”

Interestingly, Fire-Boltt had a few months earlier brought on board Bollywood star Vicky Kaushalas its first brand ambassador. The company also recently announced its plans to go global in a big way, however, details of the same are yet to be unveiled.

Fire-Boltt is a wearable, gaming, and audio brand offering a bouquet of premium quality audio, fitness, and fashion products powered by cutting-edge technology. Notably under Kohli, the RCB have entered the Playoff of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi in their second last contest of the league stage on Wednesday.

Kohli has been in terrific form this season as he has amassed 357 runs from 12 games so far in the season. With a top score of 72 not out, he has averaged 32.45 and has slammed three half-centuries in the process.

Kohli will continue to play with same intensity: Agarkar

Former India pacer Ajit Agarkar has reckoned that Virat Kohli will continue to play with the same energy and enthusiasm despite deciding to step down from Team India’s T20 captaincy and the IPL 2021 season.

“I think one of the things we’ve seen throughout his career, even when he wasn’t the captain and when he played under MS Dhoni quite a bit, the energy and the passion still seemed the same. I can’t imagine it changing just because he’s not the captain and just being one of the guys,” Agarkar said on Star Sports after RCB’s nine-wicket loss to KKR on Monday night.

Kohli recently decided to step down as India’s T20 skipper after the ICC T20 World Cup in Dubai and Oman in October-November and also said he was relinquishing his RCB captaincy after the 2021 IPL season.

Former India wicketkeeper-batsman Parthiv Patel said Kolhi must be feeling relieved after relinquishing the RCB captaincy given the workload coupled with prolonged stays in bio-bubbles.

“I think he looked more emotional than happy. I think when you’re playing for one franchise for so many years, you get that emotional connect which was there in RCB. I think RCB actually invested in Virat Kohli’s talent in 2008 and then showed a lot of trust in him as well because if you look at his and RCB’s journey, it has been a rollercoaster one.

“But yeah, he might be relieved because see moving around from one bubble to another can take a load on you and he has spoken about the workload and intensity, which he plays with. I think every practice session, every match session or gym session, he does it with full intensity and that’s something I’m sure he must’ve thought about.”

Recently after announcing to quit the Team India captaincy in the shortest format of the game, Kohli has also decided to step down from his role as captain of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) after the completion of VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021.

Kohli, one of the most decorated players of the franchise, will continue to be part of the RCB squad.

Announcing the move, Kohli said in a statement: “It has been a great and an inspiring journey, captaining a talented bunch of players in the RCB squad. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the RCB management, coaches, support staff, players, and the entire RCB family, who have been instrumental in the growth of the franchise over the years. It wasn’t an easy decision but one that has been well thought of and in the best interest of this wonderful franchise.”

“The RCB family remains close to my heart as we continue to strive to achieve excellence. As I have mentioned previously in many occasions, I will only play for RCB until my retirement from the game of cricket,” he added.

I have been an Audi fan even before I was formally associated with the brand. Audi cars reflect elegance and sportiness, which resonate perfectly with my personality.”

“I am extremely delighted to continue my association with Audi India and be a part of the brand family. It is safe to say that my relationship with Audi India is more of a test match than just a T20”, added Kohli.
