FC Goa appoint Derrick Pereira as head coach

FC Goa on Tuesday announced the appointment of Derrick Pereira as the club’s new head coach for the ongoing Hero Indian Super League (ISL) season.

Pereira, who is currently with the Club as its Technical Director had taken charge of the Gaurs along with Clifford Miranda and Roma Cunillera during the fag end of the 2019/20 season after the departure of Sergio Lobera.

The former Indian international during his little time at the helm of the Gaurs, took the side to finish top of the ISL table at the end of the 2018-19 league table – paving the way for FC Goa’s qualification for group stages of the 2021 AFC Champions League.

The 59-year-old has the extensive experience of working with the majority of players from the present FC Goa squad.  A number of them have played under him in his stints before FC Goa while many more come through the youth ranks under his guidance.

Speaking of the task ahead, new FC Goa head coach Derrick Pereira said: “It is a great honour to become head coach of a club I have been part of for so many years. It is a very proud day for both me and my family.

“This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players. I would like to thank the club management for this opportunity and thank the club’s supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together,” he added.

Speaking on the appointment, FC Goa’s Director of Football, Ravi Puskur said: “We’re pleased to announce that Derrick has taken over as the Head Coach of the team. He’s been ingrained into the fabric of the club and is well versed with our players and staff with a vast majority of them having worked with him.”

“He will settle into the day to day workings of the team seamlessly and we’re certain he’ll continue to push our brand of football. A Goan taking over FC Goa is the perfect representation of what we believe in and we’re confident he will make his mark on this team and will continue to push the team towards its objectives,” he added.

Derrick Pereira has been with the club since 2017, serving as the Assistant Coach in 2017-18 before taking up the role of the Technical Director at the beginning of the 2018-19 season.

Notably, the development comes after Juan Ferrando had stepped down as the chief coach of the club.

Speaking on Ferrando’s departure, Director of Football, Ravi Puskur had said: “We’re very disappointed to lose Juan. His decision to leave the club was rather unexpected and came as a surprise, particularly at this juncture of the season, where we are in the middle of the season.”

“We’re particularly disappointed that we were kept in the dark until yesterday morning where he communicated his desire to leave the club. However, once he stated his stance and the release clause was activated, we were left with little alternative. I wish Juan the best for his future,” he had added.

Ferrando, in his only full season with FC Goa in 2020-21 guided the Gaurs to the semifinals of the ISL. He was also in charge of the Club during their maiden and historic continental voyage in the  AFC Champions League, where they finished third in Group E.

On the other hand, Pereira headed FC Goa’s Youth Development, with three of his teams finishing as Champions. He was also in charge of the India U23 team in 2019.

He has previously managed Mahindra United, winning the National Football League in his maiden season. That established him as one of the premier coaches of the country as he went on to manage Pune FC, Salgaocar, DSK Shivajians and Churchill Brothers.

Star Sports launches new campaign ahead of Hero ISL 2021-22

For over eight years, the Hero Indian Super League (ISL) has significantly altered the football landscape in the country – from nurturing and showcasing young players, creating a wide talent pool, attracting attention of some of the biggest stars and clubs in the world to creating a dedicated fan base, the league has emphatically evolved every season.

The premier football league in the country has also established the inherent growth of Indian football stars and made them household names.

As the new season of the Hero ISL 2021-22 dawns over the horizon, Star Sports network, the official broadcaster of the tournament, celebrates the true passion of fans coming together to support their teams, cities, and favorite stars in the league through its campaign- ‘Yeh India Ka Football Hai’.

The campaign film creatively articulates the highlights of the storied league – key rivalries in the league, the fandom that players have gained throughout the country, and the voracious fanfare across teams– a true indication and celebration of Indian football throughout the country making it ‘India ka Football’.

Speaking about the NEW Hero ISL 2021-22 campaign, a Star Sports Spokesperson said: “Every Indian football fan looks forward to the power-packed live action of Hero ISL.”

“We are thrilled to bring the football fans together to celebrate ‘India ka Football’ with another edition of the Hero ISL which will lay emphasis on an enhanced viewing experience, improved storytelling, product innovations, and stronger fan engagement,” he added.

The upcoming season of the soccer league will return to the sandy shores of Goa once again this time as the previous season was also held in Goa alone due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last season’s finalists ATK Mohun Bagan will lock horns with Kerala Blasters in the tournament opener.

SC East Bengal will get their campaign underway against Jamshedpur FC on 21st November, while defending champions Mumbai City FC will renew their highly anticipated rivalry against FC Goa on 22nd November in a blockbuster clash.

The first installment of the high-octane derby SC East Bengal vs ATK Mohun Bagan will be held in the second round of the season on November 27.

Significantly, the ISL is the highest level league in Indian football system which is organised by All India Football Federation (AIFF) and their commercial partners Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL).

The league currently comprises 11 clubs.

During the league stage of the competition, each club plays against all the other clubs in a round-robin style. At the end of the league stage, the team with the most points gets declared the Premiers and presented with a trophy named League Winners Shield, and the top four clubs qualify for the play-offs.

The season then culminates with the ISL Final to determine the Champions who are presented with the ISL Trophy.

Ganguly steps down as Director of ATK Mohun Bagan Director to avoid conflict of interest

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) President Sourav Ganguly has stepped down as as the director of Indian Super League (ISL) outfit ATK Mohun Bagan.

Notably, ATK Mohun Bagan is a franchise owned by RPSG Group, which had recently won the Lucknow franchise of the Indian Premier League.

Ganguly has now confirmed that he resigned from the position in the football club to avoid potential conflict of interest.

Follwing reports about his conflicted position by virtue of being the BCCI president as well as a director of company that owns an IPL franchise, Ganguly had to step down. “I have resigned,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz and confirming the development,

With Ganguly stepping down, the conflict-of-interest controversy seems to be settled down however, another issue regarding CVC Capital, who acquired the Ahmedabad IPL franchise after bidding Rs 5625 crores, is yet to be resolved.

After the auctions, former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi raised question on CVC Capital’s acquisition of a franchise and had said that the BCCI not doing a thorough check on the company’s sporting assets.

“I am shocked that the BCCI did not do their homework and did not check that one of the bidders also owns a betting company. CVC Capital apparently owns 80 per cent of Sky Betting. How does anybody control anti-corruption in such cases?,” Modi had questioned.

“If the owners of a team are also the owners of a betting company, it defeats the purpose of not allowing the promoters of betting in India where betting is illegal. I am shocked that the BCCI let it happen. They should disqualify the owners and award the franchise to the second-best bidder,” he had added.

“I guess betting companies can buy an IPL team, must be a new rule. Apparently one qualified bidder also owns a big betting company. What next? Does BCCI not do its homework? What can Anti-Corruption do in such a case? #cricket,” he further expressed.

When asked on how CVC capitals has acquired other sporting properties globally despite investing in a betting company, Modi said: “It is ok that they are participating in other leagues because they allow betting companies. There is a problem here because in India betting is not allowed. Already you have had a betting scandal (in 2013), that is the problem.”

After the auctions, the BCCI had fornally announced the development late on Monday saying: “BCCI is pleased to announce the following successful bidders (subject to definitive documentation and other formalities being completed): 1. RPSG Ventures Ltd. – Lucknow (for INR 7090 crores) 2. Irelia Company Pte Ltd. (CVC Capital Partners) – Ahmedabad (for INR 5625 crores).”

Now after acquiring the teams, both the parties will need to pay the entire amount over a period of 10 years.

Notably, the two new franchises – Ahmedabad and Lucknow – will now participate in the cash-rich IPL from the 2022 season onwards subject to the bidders completing the post-bid formalities as specified in the ITT document.

The IPL 2022 season will now comprise ten teams and will have 74 matches.

The next edition of IPL is likley to be staged in the March-April window and a mega auction for it will most probably be held in December this year or January, 2022.
