FC Goa appoint Derrick Pereira as head coach

FC Goa on Tuesday announced the appointment of Derrick Pereira as the club’s new head coach for the ongoing Hero Indian Super League (ISL) season.

Pereira, who is currently with the Club as its Technical Director had taken charge of the Gaurs along with Clifford Miranda and Roma Cunillera during the fag end of the 2019/20 season after the departure of Sergio Lobera.

The former Indian international during his little time at the helm of the Gaurs, took the side to finish top of the ISL table at the end of the 2018-19 league table – paving the way for FC Goa’s qualification for group stages of the 2021 AFC Champions League.

The 59-year-old has the extensive experience of working with the majority of players from the present FC Goa squad.  A number of them have played under him in his stints before FC Goa while many more come through the youth ranks under his guidance.

Speaking of the task ahead, new FC Goa head coach Derrick Pereira said: “It is a great honour to become head coach of a club I have been part of for so many years. It is a very proud day for both me and my family.

“This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players. I would like to thank the club management for this opportunity and thank the club’s supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together,” he added.

Speaking on the appointment, FC Goa’s Director of Football, Ravi Puskur said: “We’re pleased to announce that Derrick has taken over as the Head Coach of the team. He’s been ingrained into the fabric of the club and is well versed with our players and staff with a vast majority of them having worked with him.”

“He will settle into the day to day workings of the team seamlessly and we’re certain he’ll continue to push our brand of football. A Goan taking over FC Goa is the perfect representation of what we believe in and we’re confident he will make his mark on this team and will continue to push the team towards its objectives,” he added.

Derrick Pereira has been with the club since 2017, serving as the Assistant Coach in 2017-18 before taking up the role of the Technical Director at the beginning of the 2018-19 season.

Notably, the development comes after Juan Ferrando had stepped down as the chief coach of the club.

Speaking on Ferrando’s departure, Director of Football, Ravi Puskur had said: “We’re very disappointed to lose Juan. His decision to leave the club was rather unexpected and came as a surprise, particularly at this juncture of the season, where we are in the middle of the season.”

“We’re particularly disappointed that we were kept in the dark until yesterday morning where he communicated his desire to leave the club. However, once he stated his stance and the release clause was activated, we were left with little alternative. I wish Juan the best for his future,” he had added.

Ferrando, in his only full season with FC Goa in 2020-21 guided the Gaurs to the semifinals of the ISL. He was also in charge of the Club during their maiden and historic continental voyage in the  AFC Champions League, where they finished third in Group E.

On the other hand, Pereira headed FC Goa’s Youth Development, with three of his teams finishing as Champions. He was also in charge of the India U23 team in 2019.

He has previously managed Mahindra United, winning the National Football League in his maiden season. That established him as one of the premier coaches of the country as he went on to manage Pune FC, Salgaocar, DSK Shivajians and Churchill Brothers.

The upcoming season of the soccer league will return to the sandy shores of Goa once again this time as the previous season was also held in Goa alone due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last season’s finalists ATK Mohun Bagan will lock horns with Kerala Blasters in the tournament opener.

SC East Bengal will get their campaign underway against Jamshedpur FC on 21st November, while defending champions Mumbai City FC will renew their highly anticipated rivalry against FC Goa on 22nd November in a blockbuster clash.

The first installment of the high-octane derby SC East Bengal vs ATK Mohun Bagan will be held in the second round of the season on November 27.

The league currently comprises 11 clubs.

During the league stage of the competition, each club plays against all the other clubs in a round-robin style. At the end of the league stage, the team with the most points gets declared the Premiers and presented with a trophy named League Winners Shield, and the top four clubs qualify for the play-offs.

The season then culminates with the ISL Final to determine the Champions who are presented with the ISL Trophy.

FSDL reallocates Hero ISL prize money; league winners to gain windfall of Rs 9.5 cr

Football Sports Development (FSDL) on Friday announced an increase in the prize money for Hero Indian Super League (ISL) ‘Shield Winners’ by Rs 3 Crore starting from the 2021-22 season.

The League Winners Shield, introduced in the 2019-20 season conferred to the table toppers were earlier presented with a cash reward of Rs 50 Lakhs since the last two seasons.

As part of the ISL prize money reallocation, FSDL have now allocated a total of Rs 3.5 Crore as cash reward for the League winners in order to bring an equivalence in the prize money distribution across the five cash prize categories.

The League winners are also rewarded with the highest honour to represent India in Asia’s showpiece club football competition – the AFC Champions League. FC Goa were its inaugural winners in 2019-20.

Mumbai City FC are its current holders, having completed the ‘double’ along with winning their maiden Hero ISL trophy in 2020-21.

The Hero ISL champions, winner of the final, will now be offered Rs 6 Crore, which was previously Rs 8 crore, while the runners-up will get Rs 3 crore, which was previously Rs 4 crore. The other two semi-finalists will continue to receive Rs 1.5 crore each.

For calculations, here are three scenarios laid out for a club winning the League Shield:

  • As table toppers, the club is guaranteed Rs 3.5 Crore.
  • As added incentive, if the club goes on to win the ISL Championship, they would stand to gain a total windfall of Rs 9.5 Crore
  • If finished as runners-up in the ISL final, the club would earn total of Rs 6.5 Crore
  • In case the table topper finishes 3rd or 4th in the knock out competition, the club would earn a minimum of Rs 5 Crore

The total prize money pool for ISL 2021-22 remains Rs 15.5 Crore.

ISL: Bagan spar with NorthEast in intense battle to book final spot

ATK Mohun Bagan and NorthEast United walked away on level terms after their first leg playoffs of the Hero Indian Super League. The second leg at the Fatorda Stadium on Tuesday will decide if NorthEast will play their first final or if Antonio Habas leads his side to a third one.

Bagan coach Antonio Habas was denied a win in the first leg by a late Idrissa Sylla header, a result that mounted pressure on Bagan, who haven’t been at their best off late.

The Kolkata team has had a solid defence throughout the season, having conceded just 15 in the league stage. But the team has conceded 5 goals in the last 3 games which cost them the Hero ISL League Winners Shield as well as an advantage in the first leg. However, coach Habas feels such situations do arise in the games where players tend to lose concentration.

Habas though looked relaxed ahead of the second-leg. “There is no pressure,” he said. “It’s all about a big opportunity and this opportunity wouldn’t come again. We have to enjoy now. We have to give our best and enjoy the semi-finals.”

When questioned about his approach against Khalid Jamil’s side, who are unbeaten in the last 10 games, a composed Habas replied he had instructed his players to stay calm. “Strategy is to keep calm and keep the intensity and to try to win. It’s more important to play with calmness and to go through to the final,” he said.

Bagan will bank on David Williams and Roy Krishna on Tuesday as the duo has never failed to contribute with goals at this stage.

For NorthEast, who are unbeaten under Jamil, it will be their first-ever final, provided they beat ATKMB.

“We have to focus on getting the result as it is a do-or-die game,” stated Jamil. “There is always pressure. I have told the boys to enjoy this pressure. Both teams have to fight for a result because of no away goals, so it is the same for our opponent as well.”

“We will have to create more scoring opportunities and put them under pressure. One team will have to outscore the other in this one as a draw will create the added load of 30 minutes,” he said.
