Franchises will be allowed to retain 4 players in IPL 2022 auction: Report

The mega auction for the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to take place either in December this year or January, 2022 and with two new all set to be added to the league’s roster, the main issue has been the number of players a franchise can retain ahead of the auction.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, discussions on the issue took place between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the franchise owners following which it was decided that a franchise can retain up to three Indian players and two overseas players with the overall count for retained players not crossing four.

“A team is set to be allowed to keep up to three Indian and two foreign players with the total number of retentions not exceeding four. There may also be a cap on retaining uncapped players – a team will not be allowed more than two,” the report stated.

“It is learnt that the player purse will be INR 90 crore, and in the subsequent two years, there will be an incremental hike and the purse will go up to INR 95 crore and INR 100 crore. If a franchisee chooses to retain four players, it will have to spend around 40-45 percent of its purse, leaving it INR 36-40 crore lesser than the franchise that doesn’t opt to retain any player,” it added.

The report further said that an official announcement on the retention rules will be done as soon as the two new franchises are finalised.

Notably, the sale of the two new teams is likely to take place on October 25 in Dubai.

Recently, IPL 2021 champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni had hinted that he will play the next season of the lucrative league while his franchise had reportedly said that a decision on whether to retain the talismanic skipper will be taken only after knowing the rules of the system.

Dhoni had said that he hadn’t decided how he would fit into the retention scheme of things and after his side defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs in the summit clash of IPL 2021, he had said: “Again I’ve said it before, it depends on the BCCI. With two new teams coming in, we have to decide what is good for CSK.”

“It’s not about me being there in the top-three or four. It’s about making a strong core to ensure the franchise doesn’t suffer. The core group, we have to have a hard look to see who can contribute for the next 10 years,” he had added.

Later, former BCCI president and India Cements Ltd (ICL) vice-chairman N Srinivasan had emphatically said that there is no CSK without their current skipper Dhoni.

When he was asked about Dhoni’s future with the Yellow Brigade, Srinivasan had said: “Dhoni is part and parcel of CSK. There is no CSK without Dhoni and there is no Dhoni without CSK.”

Meanwhile, Dhoni, 40, in an event celebrating 75 years of India Cements, had said that he hopes to play his last match in Chennai.

“When it comes to farewell, you can still come and see me play for CSK and that can be my farewell game. So, you will still get that opportunity to bid me farewell. Hopefully, we will come to Chennai and play my last game over there and we can meet the fans there,” Dhoni said while interacting with fans during the virtual event.

No CSK without MS Dhoni: N Srinivasan

Former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and India Cements Ltd (ICL) vice-chairman N Srinivasan has emphatically said that there is no Chennai Super Kings (CSK) without their current skipper MS Dhoni.

Recently under the captaincy of Dhoni, the Yellow Brigade lifted their fourth IPL trophy after the side defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs in the final of the 2021 season in Dubai.

Showering praise on Dhoni, Srinivasan told reporters: “It was a remarkable win. It puts Chennai on top of the world.”

When asked about Dhoni’s future with CSK, he said: “Dhoni is part and parcel of CSK. There is no CSK without Dhoni and there is no Dhoni without CSK.”

Recently, Dhoni had hinted that he will play the next season of the IPL while his franchise had reportedly said that a decision on whether to retain the talismanic skipper will be taken only after knowing the rules of the system.

The BCCI is yet to lay down the retention rules as two more teams are set to be added in the 2022 edition of the cash-rich league.

Earlier after winning his fourth IPL trophy for the Yellow Brigade, Dhoni had said that he hadn’t decided how he would fit into the retention scheme of things.

“Again I’ve said it before, it depends on the BCCI. With two new teams coming in, we have to decide what is good for CSK,” Dhoni said after CSK defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) by 27 runs in the summit clash of IPL 2021 on Friday.

“It’s not about me being there in the top-three or four. It’s about making a strong core to ensure the franchise doesn’t suffer. The core group, we have to have a hard look to see who can contribute for the next 10 years,” he had said.

Earlier, a CSK official had said that although they were not aware of the retention rules however, if it is followed in the next auction, the franchise will use it for Dhoni.

Earlier on october 5, Dhoni had hinted that he will play for the Yellow Brigade for at least one more IPL season by saying that his fans can see him play a ‘farewell game’ in Chennai next year.

Dhoni, 40, in an event celebrating 75 years of India Cements, said that he hopes to play his last match in Chennai.

Under Dhoni, CSK has made to nine IPL finals in the 12 seasons they had featured so far in the history of the lucrative league.

The team under Dhoni had first won the coveted trophy in the year 2010 before winning it again in 2011, 2018 and 2021.

CSK also has the highest win percentage of matches among all teams in the IPL which is  59.83 percent. The Yellow Brigade also hold the records of most appearances in the IPL playoffs as they have made it to eleven times from 12.

CSK to take call on Dhoni after knowing retention rules

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni has hinted that he will play the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and his franchise has now reportedly said that a decision on whether to retain the talismanic skipper will be taken only after knowing the rules of the system.

Dhoni’s appointment as mentor not meant to undermine anybody: BCCI

BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal has said that appointing former India captain MS Dhoni as the national team’s mentor was not meant for undermining anybody.

He also said that India will definitely benefit from the presence of the legend in the camp.

“He (Dhoni) has been a great leader. Under his captaincy, India won the inaugural World Twenty20, the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups, the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy. Records are amazing. It is really great to have him as a mentor of the team (for the ICC World Cup).

“He has a good reputation and respect in the team, and also bringing him doesn’t mean to undermine anybody. They have also done a phenomenal job,” Dhumal told India Ahead.

Further asked if Virat Kohli’s decision to step down from T20 Captaincy was of his own or the BCCI forced him, Dhumal said, “The board didn’t ask him to step down. It was absolutely his own decision. Why would we ask him to step down? He was doing a great job.”

Notably, the T20 World Cup event was scheduled to start in 2020 but was forced to be suspended due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Moreover, the showpiece event was earlier scheduled to be hosted in India but now it will take place in UAE and Oman in a total of four venues, Muscat, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.

Earlier this month, Dhoni’s appointment as Team India’s mentor for the showpiece event was made official by BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

While announcing the India squad, Shah had said that Dhoni was keen on contributing to the senior national team and his appointment as a mentor was only for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

“Mr Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be joining Team India as mentor for the upcoming T20 World Cup. I am glad that MS has accepted BCCI’s offer and he is keen to contribute to the national team once again. MS will work closely with Mr Ravi Shastri as well as other support staff to provide support and direction to Team India,” Shah had said while announcing the India squad to the media in a virtual interaction.

Later, the decision to appoint Dhoni as the team’s mentor during the upcoming T20 World Cup had landed in a controversey as Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) life member Sanjeev Gupta has questioned the move.

Gupta was not convinced about the decision and had written to all the members of the BCCI Apex Council, in the absence of an ethics officer, questioning Dhoni’s appointment.

Gupta had mentioned in his letter that the appointment was a case of conflict of interest as how can a reigning captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) could also be the mentor of Team India?

Meanwhile, he had cited example of Rahul Dravid, who had to leave his coaching stint with Rajasthan Royals (RR) to become the director of the National Cricket Academy.

According to Gupta, the decision of the board was a gross violation of the Supreme Court norms.
