SLC likely to slash players salaries by 40%

After their disastrous show in the recently held Test series against England, top Sri Lanka cricketers are likely to feel the heat when their national contracts are up for negotiations in six weeks time.

According to reports, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is considering to slash players salaries by as much as 40 percent following their poor outing in the home series against England.

Significantly, the hosts had lost the first Test by seven wickets and the second Test by six wickets. The home side witnessed a batting collapsing in both the games.

Although a performance based incentive for players was suggested by Sri Lanka Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa recently, the initial suggestion to slash the player’s salaries had come within the board.

Accordingly, SLC is expected to cut down on annual retainers by almost half. As a result, a top player who had an annual contract worth US$ 120,000, will now only get somewhere in the region of US$ 70,000.

The islanders will now tour West Indies where they will play all three formats.
