Shakib pulls out from sponsorship deal with betting compnay Betwinner

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has decided to pull out from his controversial sponsorship deal with a betting company named Betwinner News, the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus has said.

Shakib’s decision came after BCB Chief Nazmul Hassan had stated that the star all-rounder would never play for Bangladesh again if he did not end his “affiliation with a betting company”.

According to Yunus, Shakib informed the BCB of his decision in a letter on Thursday evening.

“Shakib has informed us shortly before (now) that he has terminated the contract with the company. He said that all social media posts pertaining to that sponsorship will be deleted,” Yunus was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

Notably, Shakib’s endorsement deal with the betting company was reportedly as a violation law because as per the existing laws of Bangladesh, there are stringent prohibitions on establishments with any gambling firm.

On August 2, the star all-rounder had announced about his partnership with Betwinner News through a social media post. A couple of days later, Hassan had said that the BCB will investigate Shakib’s sponsorship post.

Later, Betwinner News put out a message on their homepage saying it “doesn’t have any relation to any kind of betting or gambling activities” and that it’s a “sports news portal only”.

On Wednesday afternoon, Hassan said that Shakib had to choose between playing for Bangladesh and keeping his endorsement with the company, giving the allrounder a day to make his decision.
