Shakib Al Hasan named Bangladesh T20 captain until 2022 World Cup

Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was on Saturday appointed skipper of the national side until the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced.

The announcement comes after Shakib pulled out of his sponsorship deal with Betwinner, a sports betting company, and had a closed-door meeting with BCB Chief Nazmul Hasan at his house.

”Shakib al Hasan is the captain till the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup,” BCB cricket operation chairman Jalal Yunus told reporters after the meeting.

”He admitted that he made a mistake (signing the deal with Betwinner News) and he said that won’t make any further mistake and we are hopeful,” he added.

Meanwhile, the BCB also made several changes in their T20I squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, with Liton Das ruled out from the tournament due to injuries.

Along with Shakib, Mushfiqur Rahim, Sabbir Rahman, Ebadat Hossain and Mohammad Saifuddin also make a return to the squad for the showpiece event while Munim Shahriar, Nazmul Hossain and Shoriful Islam could not make the cut.

However, the BCB opted to include Nurul Hasan, who had earlier been ruled out. Notably, Nurul had an operation and his stitch is expected to be removed on August 21.

Commenting on Nurul, BCB chief selector Minhajul Abedin, while announcing the squad, said: “We will see where he stands and so we are keeping him in the squad.”
