Serie A announces resumption schedule; some fans likely from July

Set to resume action from June 20, Italy’s top flight professional football league Serie A has released a scheduled until match day 35. The Italians soccer may also see some fans returning to stadiums as early as next month despite the nation having been one off the biggest victims of the novel coronavirus.

The action will restart after three months as Torino face Parma on Saturday, June 20.  Hellas Verona take on Cagliari later the same day as the league will have to accommodate 124 matches in 44 days. The next day will see Atlanta taking on Sassuolo and Inter Milan hosting Sampdoria as San Siro Stadium.

There will be a match day every three days until August 2.

The initial dates for the rescheduled games have been released only up to the matchday 35. The schedule for the remaining three rounds will be announced later.

The games to begin with will take place behind closed door with only 300 people, including players, match staff and TV crew. The Serie A is contemplating to have some fans in the stadium by next month. The proposal, put forward by Juventus’ president Andrea Agnelli and Lega president Paolo Dal Pino, could see venues to be filled up to 20% of their full capacity in order to guarantee social distancing measure.

Serie A was suspended on March 9 with most teams having 12 games still to play.

Juventus, chasing a ninth successive title, lead the table with 63 points, one ahead of Lazio with Inter a further eight behind in third.

Football lovers in Italy won’t have to wait till June 20 for a dose of some LIVE action. Sports Minister Vincenzo Spadafora has confirmed that Coppa Italia – the League’s Cup – will return from June 13 with the second leg of the two semi-finals between Napoli and FC Inter and Juventus and AC Milan. The final will be played on June 17.

The players will be routinely tested with both swabs and blood investigations to ensure isolation measures are promptly implemented in case of positive testing for COVID-19.
