Revised schedule for India’s tour of South Africa announced

Cricket South Africa (CSA), the governing body for the sport of cricket in South Africa, on Monday announced the updated schedule of the Indian men’s cricket team’s upcoming tour of South Africa.

The series, which was earlier scheduled to begin from December 17, will now begin from December 26.

The first Test will be played at the SuperSport Park in Centurion between December 26 and 30 while the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg will host the second Test from January.

The third match of the series will be played in Newlands in Cape Town between January 11 to 15.

Issuing a statement, the CSA said: “It is a pleasure for Cricket South Africa (CSA) to confirm the updated schedule for the India men’s tour to South Africa. As announced over the weekend, the tour has been reduced from three series to two: the Betway Test and One-Day International series, taking place from 26 December to 23 January 2022 across four venues, following successful engagement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),” the official CSA release stated.

Meanwhile, India will also play three ODIs during the tour. On the other hand, the T20I series has already been portponed.

“The Test series will form part of the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship, while the ODI series will form part of the ICC Men’s World Cup Super League, the qualification tournament for the 2023 ICC Men’s World Cup,” the CSA release further stated.

Notably, the spread of a new variant of Covid-19 in the African nation had raised doubts over the upcoming tour however, the Ministry of International relations and Cooperation of South Africa had given full assurance to the Indian government and the BCCI regarding the safety of Indian players.

The Ministry had said that the touring side would be provided the best “bio-secure environment” to ensure the safety of players from the fast-spreading Omicron variant of Covid-19.

Significantly, the Omicron variant, which was reportedly first detected in South Africa, has spread to many parts of the world with several nations now suspending flights to and from the country.
