Raina’s uncle killed by robbers, aunt critical after attack

Suresh Raina is compelled to leave the UAE and return home ahead of the Indian Premier League because of a family emergency. His uncle was reportedly killed by robbers and aunty is in a critical condition after a midnight burglary attempt in their home at Pathankot, Punjab.

Chennai Super Kings had announced in the morning today (Saturday) that Raina will abandon the IPL 2020 due to personal reasons.

Hindi daily Dainik Jagran has reported that the robbers attacked the victims’ home on the August 19 night when the family was sleeping on their terrace. Raina’s uncle and aunty and uncle were brutally attacked with lethal weapons.

“Sister of Raina’s father Asha Devi is in a critical condition in the hospital. Her 58-year-old husband Ashok Kumar was killed in the attack. Their two sons, 32-year-old Kaushal Kumar and 24-year-old Apin Kumar, have also sustained injuries. Ashok Kumar’s 80-year-old mother also sustained serious injuries in the attack,” the report said.

Satya Devi has since been discharged from hospital. Other victims are still undergoing treatment, said Pathankot Superintendent of Police Prabhjot Singh Virk.

The culprits are still at large.

The police have reportedly identified investigation after knowing that the victims were Raina’s close relative.

According to national news agency PTI, Raina is expected to visit the victims’ family.

According to police, three to four members of the notorious “Kale Kachhewala” gang had come with an intention to loot, attacked Ashok Kumar and his family members at their house in Thariyal village near Madhopur of Pathankot.

Ashok Kumar reportedly suffered head injuries and died on the same night, police said. Confirming Kumar’s death, Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Singh Khurana had earlier said he had no confirmation about the victim’s relationship with the cricketer.

“We are investigating the matter,” said the SSP.

According to police, robbers decamped with some cash and gold from the house.
