Piyush Chawla’s father loses battle to COVID-19

Former India cricketer Piyush Chawla’s father Pramod Kumar Chawla, who was around 60-years-old, passed away on Monday after battling COVID-19.

“With deepest grief, we announce that my beloved father, Mr Pramod Kumar Chawla, left for the heavenly abode on 10th May 2021. He was suffering from covid and post covid complications,” Piyush wrote on his Instagram account.

“We invite your kind thoughts and prayers in this difficult times. May his noble soul rest in peace,” he added.

Meanwhile, Chawla’s latest Indian Premier League (IPL) team Mumbai Indians (MI) too offered their condolences tweeting: “Our thoughts go out to Piyush Chawla who lost his father, Mr. Pramod Kumar Chawla this morning. We are with you and your family in this difficult time. Stay strong.”

Earlier, Aligarh-born Piyush was acquired by defending IPL champions MI in the IPL auction this year. However,  he did not play a single game in the 2021 season, which was indefinitely suspended due to COVID-19.

Piyush, who once led India U-19 team in the World Cup, made his international debut in 2006 and  featured in three Tests, 25 ODIs and seven T20Is, with his last match coming in 2012.
