Sports streaming period registers highest OTT video consumption in 2020: RedSeer Consulting

According to a report by RedSeer Consulting, the Indian over-the-top (OTT) platforms have witnessed some interesting trends. The report on Wednesday stated that the OTT video consumption grew 13 percent (on-year) in 2020.

The consumption increased from 181 billion minutes in January 2020 to 204 billion minutes in January this year, according to data provided by RedSeer.

“Originals consumption has grown more than 50 per cent in the last year as consumers’ preference to binge watch unique thrillers and action stories has grown. Players have also invested more into creating them,” said Nikhil Dalal, senior consultant at RedSeer.

“Watching some of the favorite shows and movies on repeat enabled the engagement above Jan 2020 levels, despite a drop in supply of daily soaps. On the other hand, IPL and sports activities since September 2020 made the consumption to rise again by over 25 per cent compared to January 2020 levels,” he added.

Subscription video on demand (SVOD) platforms had the highest NPS (net promotor scores), led by Netflix at 59 per cent and Amazon Prime at 53 per cent, followed by Hotstar, Voot, SonyLiv, Zee5 and MX Player.
