Neeraj Chopra rises to number 2 in world rankings

Following his sensational show in the just concluded Tokyo 2020, Indian javelin thrower and gold medalist Neeraj Chopra has gained 14 places to be placed at the second spot in the latest world rankings.

On August 7, Neeraj had created historyas he had become the only athlete from India to win a gold in track and field event in the Olympics.

Notably, Neeraj, 23, had thrown the javelin to a distance of 87.58m to pick the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

In the rankings, German athlete Johannes Vetter, who has a score of 1396, holds the numero uno spot in the latest rankings of the World Athletics.

On the other hand, Neeraj has a score of 1315 in men’s javelin throw and is at the second place.

“Most keen followers of the sport had heard of Neeraj Chopra before the Olympic Games. But after winning the javelin in Tokyo, and in the process becoming India’s first athletics gold medallist in Olympic history, Chopra’s profile sky-rocketed,” the World Athletics website read.

After his stunning show, Neeraj had said: “Still processing this feeling. To all of India and beyond, thank you so much for your support and blessings that have helped me reach this stage. This moment will live with me forever.”
