Messi a free agent now as Barcelona contract expires

One of the greatest footballer Lionel Messi’s contract with Barcelona has expired on Wednesday midnight and the star player is now a free agent.

Messi, who had a two-decade-old association with the club, can now sign with any club as per his will.

Although, it had been earlier reported that Messi was close to sign a contract extension for two more years, no such development really took place.

Messi had earlier announced that he wanted to leave the club following the team’s embarrassing 2-8 loss to Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals of the Champions League, one of the worst defeats in the club’s and Mess’s history.

Later, Messi led the Spanish league after scoring with 30 goals this seaaon and alao helped the team win the Copa del Rey title.

In Messi’s previous contract, signed in 2017, he reportedly earned 138 million euros ($164 million) per season.

Messi has won 35 titles in 17 seasons with Barcelona. He helped the club win the Champions League four times, the Spanish league 10 times, the Copa del Rey seven times and the Spanish Super Cup eight times.
