Lionel Messi overtakes Pele as the all-time record scorer for a single club

Barcelona great Lionel Messi has had an incredible career thus far and has made it a habit of breaking records. When the Catalan giants took on Real Valladolid in La Liga on Tuesday, the little Argentine added yet another record to his list of achievements.

In a 3-0 win away from home, Messi scored his 644th goal in an FC Barcelona shirt to surpass Pele as the all-time record scorer for a single club.

Barca’s first goal came in the 21st minute when Lionel Messi found Clement Lenglet with a sublime cross and the Frenchman headed the ball home. It was also Messi’s first assist of the season. The 33-year-old also had a part to play in his club’s third goal of the match. He played out a pass to right-back Sergino Dest on the right flank, who went on to put in a cross into the path of Martin Braithwaite. Braithwaite slid in to put the ball into the net in the 35th minute.

Messi overtook Pele’s scoring mark with Santos when he capitalized on a pass from teenager Pedri and placed it in the far bottom corner of the goal. He almost scored his second when he hit the post with a strike in added time.

This was Barca’s first away win in 5 matches. The Spanish heavyweights stand at the 5th position in the points table with 24 points after 14 games.
