IPL 2021 remainder likley to be in UAE; final call on May 29

The BCCI is likely to take a final call on holding the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 matches at Special General Meeting (SGM) on May 29 although several reports suggests that the remaining games will be held in the UAE in the third week of September.

In the SGM, the entire domestic cricket schedule for 2021-22 will also be discussed.

As many as 31 matches are remaining in IPL 2021 which was indefinately postponed, after completion of 29 matches, due to Covid-19 cases in the bio-secure bubble.

Although there has been no official intimation from the Indian cricket board, UAE, where IPL 2020 edition was also held, appears to be the most likely venue to hold the remainder of IPL 14.

Notablt, the BCCI is trying to stage it after the conclusion of India’s Test series in England on September 14 and before the start of the T20 World Cup in mid-October.

Meanwhile, the BCCI will also take a call  on hosting the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to be held in India across nine venues in September.

However, as the country is expected to witness the third wave of the Covid pandemic during that period, the ICC could possibly move the venue out of India and so, the Indian board will also hold a discussion over the matter.

Significantly, if the ICC shifts the showpiece event, the UAE, once again, would be the most preferred venue.

Earlier, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah issued a note to state associations, calling them for a special general meeting and said: “Notice is hereby given for a Special General Meeting of the BCCI which will be held on May 29, 2021 virtually to transact the following business: Discussion on the upcoming cricket season in view of the pandemic situation prevailing in India.”
