IPL 2021: Appointment as DC skipper a tremendous opportunity for Pant, says Ponting

Delhi Capitals’ (DC) head coach Ricky Ponting feels that the recent successes against Australia and England will hand Rishabh Pant the confidence to lead the side in the upcoming 14th edition of Indian Premier league (IPL).

“This is a tremendous opportunity for the young Rishabh, who is coming off successful stints against Australia and England which will no doubt give him the confidence needed to take on a new role that comes with a lot more responsibility. The coaching group is excited to work with him, and we can’t wait for the season to get started,” said Ponting.

Significantly, Pant had played a major role in helping India win the Test series in Australia and at home against England recently.

It was his 97 on the final day of the third Sydney Test which had helped India play a draw against host Australia. Later, Pant’s unbeaten 89 on the fifth day of the Brisbane Test saw India registering a historic Test and series win down under.

Pant also impressed with his impressive knocks in the ODI series against England recently.

Speaking on his new role, Pant said: “Delhi is where I grew up, and where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team is a dream I’ve always harboured. And today, as that dream comes true, I feel humbled. I can’t wait to give my absolute best for Delhi Capitals.”

DC, which had lost in the final of the previous season, will open their 2021 campaign against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 10 in Mumbai.
