IOA to fasten process of vaccination of Olympic-bound athletes

Amidst the rising number of Covid-19 cases among athletes at various training centres of the country, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has reportedly asked the authorities to fasten the process of geeting the Olympic-bound players get vaccinated as early as possible at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Significantly, several athletes and support staff had tested positive recently at the National Centres of Excellence in Patiala and Bengaluru.

Although none of the athlete, who were tested positive, are Olympic-bound, the IOA does not want to take any chances as many of them are training together.

IOA Secretary General Rajeev Mehta said that he was writing to AIIMS Director on to fasten the process of getting the athletes vaccinated as early as possible.

Earlier in february, Mehta had written to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and urged him to consider vaccinating the Tokyo Olympics-bound athletes on a priority basis.

Significantly, more than 80 athletes have already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics, which will be held from July 23 to August 8.
