ICC to take final call on T20 WC venue on June 01

The BCCI’s hopes of staging the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup later this year might be shattered as the International Cricket Council (ICC) is likely to shift the showpiece event from India, which is expected to witness the third wave of Covid-19 pandemic after September.

The second wave of the pandemic had already forced the postponement of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) 14th season and in order to keep such challenges at bay, the ICC is set to take a call on T20 World Cup’s fate on June 01.

Even after the postponement of the IPL, the Indian cricket board has kept its hopes high to stage the T20 World Cup in the country.

Although the Covid-19 second wave is coming down in the country, researchers and health experts have predicted of the third wave, which is likley to hit India from September onwards. In such a situation, the ICC directors and managers are reportedly monitoring the situation and is expected to relocate the showpiece event at its meeting on June 2.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has called for a Special General Meeting (SGM) on May 29 to discuss the matter.

As per reports,the BCCI has kept UAE as the backup venue for the T20 World Cup.

Alos, in its bid to complete the remaining games of the postponed 14th season of the lucrative league, the BCCI has urged the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to advance the start of the five-match Test rubber between India and England by a week so that a window could be created in September for the remainder of the turnament.

The ECB however, is yet to respond to its Indian counterpart on the matter.
