Gill will be one of the best batsmen in international cricket, feels Hogg

Former Australia spinner Brad Hogg believes Shubhman Gill will be one of the best batsmen in international cricket in the coming decade but has also identified a technical glitch in the youngster’s batting.

Gill, 21, had some memorable outings against Australia’s formidable bowling attack in the recently held Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which India won 2-1.

Praising the young opener, Hogg said on his YouTube channel: “He is going to be a little bit of a legend and he is going to be one of the best openers that the world sees over the next 10 years in Test cricket.”

“There is only one little chink in the armour that he has got to work on, that is getting back and across and covering the off-stump when the ball is moving away and has got a little bit of an extra bounce,” he added.

“He tends to play away from his body. Of course, he continues to play away from his body, he is going to come up short and he is going to feed those slips and he is going to find a little bit of trouble. If he can’t get back and across, he has to learn to leave the ball early outside off-stump,” the former spinner pointed out.

Significantly, Gill made his Test debut during the tour, amassing 259 runs from six innings at an impressive average of 51.80. He played an integral role in their remarkable win in the fourth Test at the Gabba in Brisbane in January earlier this month.
