From Trinbago to Kolkata: Ali Khan to be first US cricketer in IPL

Kolkata Knight Riders had to find a replacement for injured seamer Harry Gurney. The team management found the answer in their champion Caribbean Premier League squad.

Kolkata Knight Riders have signed Trinbago Knight Riders Ali Khan as a replacement for Gurney. The 29-year-old medium-pacer in the process will become the first US player ever to play in the IPL.

Gurney was compelled to opt-out of the IPL 2020 due to a shoulder injury, which had also not allowed him to participate in England’s Vitality Blast last month.

Ali Khan was a key member of the Trinbago Knight Riders team that had won all the 12 games on way to capturing the CPL 2020 crown. Khan had picked 16 wickets during the 12 games, firing lethal yorkers at 140 kilometers per hour.

The IPL is scheduled to start in the UAE on September 10. The final is slated for November 10.

Medium-pacer Ali Khan is set to become the first player from the United States to feature in the Indian Premier League scheduled to start in the UAE from September 19 onwards.

Kolkata Knight Riders will be playing their first IPL game on September 23 against the defending champions Mumbai Indians. Khan will have to spend six days in quarantine on arrival in the UAE. It is expected that he will arrive in time to complete serve the mandatory isolation period and join the bio-secure bubble in time for the team’s first match.
