CWG 2022: PV Sindhu wins her maiden Commonwealth Games Gold

Ace India shuttler PV Sindhu won her maiden singles gold at the Commonwealth Games 2022 after defeating Canada’s Michelle Li of Canada on the last day of the quadrennial event in Birmingham on Monday.

The star Indian outclassed her opponent 21-15, 21-13 in the affair to bag India’s first gold in badminton in the ongoing edition of the showpiece event.

Sindhu, 27, finally broke the jinx with a commanding performance against an opponent ranked 13th in the world. Notably, Sindhu was unsuccessful in the previous two attempts at the CW as she had to settle for silver at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and bronze at the 2014 Glasgow Games.

The opening game on the final day of the quadrennial event in Birmingham was keenly contested with the scores level at 4-4 before Sindhu used her height and penetrating smashes to great effect to take a 14-8 lead before winning it 21-15.

The star Indian shuttler also dominated the second game as she had an 11-6 lead at the mid-game interval. Sindhu then extended her lead to 19-13 before winning it too, in style.

Sindhu will now participate in the BWF World Championships 2022, scheduled to be held in Tokyo from August 21.
