CPL 2020: Nabi does the star turn for Zouks

Mohammad Nabi reeled in his career-best figures of five 15 as he aided St. Lucia Zouks to a six-wicket win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in their Caribbean Premier League 2020. With Patriots restricted to 110 for nine in 20 overs, Zouks were never in trouble and coasted to an easy win.

Zouks’ captain Daren Sammy put Patriots in and before they had scored Nabi dismissed both Chris Lynn and Nick Kelly off the third and fifth deliveries. Lynn pushed a simple catch back to the bowler and Kelly edged to the safe hands of Cornwall in the slips.

Coming back in the third over of the innings, Nabi had another twin-strike as Denesh Ramdin after a six top-edged to Najibullah Zadran and off the next ball Patriots’ leading scorer of Hero CPL 2020, Evin Lewis, spooned a sweep to Roston Chase. Patriots were 11 for 4 in three overs and Nabi was on a hat-trick, which he ultimately did not get.

Ben Dunk did some damage control with 33 in 37 but didn’t get much support and he himself had to restrain himself to keep the innings going.

Patriots lost wickets at regular intervals and when Dunk left making it 62 for six, it was a matter of time.  Sohail Tanvir (16) and Alzarri Joseph (21 in 13) did well to take them into three figures, even as Nabi completed his five-wicket haul when Tanvir scooped a sweep to Zahir at short fine-leg.

Patriots opened their defense of a modest total with seamer Tanvir, who Rakheem Cornwall (26 in 11) hammered for two fours and two towering sixes. Jon-Russ Jaggesar’s first ball was cut by Andre Fletcher (16) for four and then Cornwall smashed Imran Khan over the roof. Cornwall left soon after but the damage had been done.

A short spell of rain followed and on resumption, Zouks needed just 81 at well under 5 an over. Khan dismissed Cornwall and added Mark Deyal off the first ball after rain to get on to a hat-trick ball. Chase (27 in 27) denied him that.

Fletcher later became Khan’s third wicket and the halfway mark of 10 overs produced 79 for three. Najibullah (33 in 24) stayed on and his hits included two reverse-swept fours.

Chase and Najibullah brought Zouks close to victory with a nice stand and when Najib left at 99 dismissed by Dunk, the target was in sight. Chase stayed not out at 27 and Zouks were home with 32 balls to spare.

Brief scores:

St Lucia Zouks 111/4 (Najibullah 33, Chase 27 not out, Cornwall 26; Imran 3/23, Dunk 1/29) beat St Kitts & Nevis Patriots 110/9 (Dunk 33, Joseph 21 not out, Emrit 16; Nabi 5/15, Cornwall 1/14, Zahir 1/18) by 6 wickets.
