Buttler likely to be England’s next white-ball skipper as Morgan ponders international retirement: Report

Charismatic England batter Jos Buttler could likely replace Eoin Morgan as skipper of the white-ball side as the latter is pondering international retirement, a report in The Guardian has said.

Morgan, 35, has been out-of-form in the recent times as he has managed a solitary century since England lifted the 2019 World Cup at home. Most recently, Morgan also failed miserably in the two ODIs he played against the Netherlands at Amstelveen as he failed to open his account twice.

On the other hand, Buttler, emerged as the leading run-getter in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and guided his side – Rajasthan Royals (RR) into the final.

He carried in smashing form against the Netherlands as he scored an unbeaten 162 (70 balls) in the world-record score of 498 in the opening game.

“Eoin Morgan could be set to announce his retirement from international cricket this week with England’s World Cup-winning captain understood to have been mulling over his future in recent days,” Guardian reported.

“But the Guardian has since learned from separate sources that he could be poised to draw stumps on a career that revolutionised England’s white‑ball cricket over the past seven years and helped to deliver the 50‑over World Cup at Lord’s in 2019.” the report said further adding: “Should Morgan call time on one or both formats, the expectation is that Jos Buttler would step up as captain, having been vice-captain since 2015 and led the team 13 times. Moeen Ali, another to deputise in recent times, would also be a candidate.”

Morgan’s has looked off-colour since his team England had won the 50-over World Cup at home defeating New Zealand in 2019. Since then, Morgam has scored just a single half-century in 26 innings.

Recently, ahead of the series against the Netherlands, Morgan while speaking to Sky Sports about his struggles had said: “If I don’t think I am good enough or I don’t feel I am contributing to the team, then I will finish.”
