Big boost to IPL 2020 prospects; Ganguly confirms ‘Asia Cup cancelled’

Another vital clog is removed from the path of the Indian Premier League 2020. The Asia Cup 2020 slated for September has been cancelled.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly has confirmed that the Asian Cricket Council event, which was being tipped to happen in Sri Lanka sometime in September, has been called off.

In a live Instagram session with the Aajtak Sports Editor Vikrant Gupta, Ganguly confirmed that “Asia Cup cancel ho chuka hai, joh September me tha (The Asia Cup slated for September has been  cancelled)”.

A formal announcement by the Asian Cricket Council is still awaited.

With the International Cricket Council also soon expected to announce the postponement of the T20 World Cup 2020, the decks for the cash-rich look all clear.

An Asian Cup in September would have meant that the players from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan could not have been able to join the IPL before October as they would have to serve the mandatory quarantine period on arrival in India.

IPL 2020 IN MUMBAI / UAE

The BCCI is reportedly considering the stage all the IPL games either in Mumbai. However, if the COVID-19 spread is not controlled in India UAE could be the next option. Sri Lanka Cricket too had expressed interest to stage the IPL, but BCCI has shown no keenness in taking the league to the Island nation.

According to information available with SportzFront, the event in Mumbai can be spread between the Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium, Wankhede Stadium and the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The Board is also considering to add Pune as the fourth venue. That will only be at about two hours’ drive from Navi Mumbai and the teams can be split into two groups with each group completing their initial stage matches across two groups.

The BCCI has, however, still not revealed its cards with regard to the IPL.
