BCCI’s IPL expansion plan delayed till July

The suspension of the 14th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) has reportedly delayed the BCCI’s plan to expand the cash-rich league to 12 teams.

Notably, the Indian cricket board had planned to add two more teams in the roster with one of the teams based out of the mighty Narendra Modi Stadium in Amedabad.

Earlier, several reports had said that the BCCI would float a tender regarding the two new teams but now they have been forced to delay the process to July 2021, which was supposed to release in May.

As per reports, BCCI officials are giving top-most priority to decide the way forward on the suspended 14th edition and any call on the two new teams wouldn’t happen before July.

Significantly, if the suspended IPL isn’t completed, the BCCI is likley to suffer a loss of around Rs 2,500 crore.

“If we fail to complete the IPL, the loss will be close to INR 2500 crore (USD 340 million approximately). That is going by early estimates,” BCCI chief Sourav Ganguly had told The Telegraph.

“There has got to be a lot of shuffling. Only a day has passed since we suspended the IPL. We have to speak to other boards and see if a window can be made available before the T20 World Cup. Lot of things are involved and we will slowly start working on them,” he said.
