Asia Cup 2021 called off due to Covid-19 scare

As a result of the deteriorating coronavirus crisis in the South Asian region, the Asia Cup Twenty20 cricket tournament, which was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka in June this year, has been called off.

“Due to the prevailing situation, it will not be possible to play the tournament in June this year,” Sri Lanka Cricket  (SLC) chief executive Ashley de Silva told reporters.

de Silva also said the event may have to be put back until after the 2023 50-over World Cup as most of the teams had already their international schedule in place for the next two years.

Meanwhile, the SLC chief executive said that a formal announcement on the development would be soon made by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC).

Significantly, the Covid-19 situation has worsened in South Asia in the last few weeks following which many countries in the region have also issues travel bans from various other nations.
