Brisbane Heat-Sydney Sixers fixture called off due to Covid-19

The fixture between Brisbane Heat and Sydney Sixers, scheduled to be held on January 5, has now been called off due to Covid-19.

The decision comes after as many as 12 Brisbane Heat players tested positive for the virus and left the club unable to find enough healthy players to fill a team to play the Sydney Sixers this evening.

“In this instance, the decision to postpone tonight’s match was the only option available given the number of cases within the Heat squad and the inability to secure the required number of players fit to take the field,” Alistair Dobson, Cricket Australia’s General Manager of Big Bash League, said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Heat’s fixture against Melbourne Renegades, scheduled for January 6, is set to go ahead with the club “working through the recruitment and testing requirements for players to take part in that match.”

Moreover, the other BBL fixture of Wednesday – Adelaide Strikers vs Hobart Hurricanes – has been pushed back by a few hours. After being rescheduled, the game will now begin at 7:15pm AEDT, the statement announced.

Earlier in the day, star Aussie all-rounder and Melbourne Stars’ skipper Glenn Maxwell had tested positive for Covid-19.

As per reports, Maxwell had underwent a rapid antigen test after his team’s defeat to Melbourne Renegades on Monday night and returned with a positive result.

After being tested positive, Mazwell is now in isolation and awaiting the result of a PCR test that he’s also undergone.

Notably, the deadly virus has infected around half of the BBL teams with players and support staffs returning with positive results in the recent few days.
