Tokyo Paralympics to be staged mostly without spectators, says reports

The upcoming Tokyo Paralympics will be staged mostly without spectators, as Japan’s capital remains under emergency lockdown due to a spike in Covid-19 infections, local media reported on Friday.

Late on Thursday, the games organisers decided to limit spectators at the events, which will kick-off on August 24.

Paralympic venues in Shizuoka, central Japan, will limit spectators to under 5,000 people, a newspaper report said.

Japan’s top health adviser Shigeru Omi on Thursday said he would request stricter emergency measures for about two weeks to tackle a spike in Covid-19 cases in Tokyo and other areas.

Tokyo on Thursday had reported 4,989 new cases.
